Abstract

1280995 Coated products M A E RHIANDO 27 Aug 1969 [27 May 1968] 25251/68 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A laminate comprises a layer of non-woven randomly oriented mixed organic and inorganic fibres embedded partially into one face of a sheet of thermoplastic material with the remaining exposed fibres being impregnated with a thermosetting material. The thermoplastic sheet is extruded, pressed or calendered PVC in plasticised or rigid form, polyethylene (which may be high density), polypropylene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, acrylic resin, cellulose acetate, polystyrene or tere-. phthalic polyester and the thermosetting resin is a phenolic, unsaturated polyester, epoxy or acrylic resin. The fibres are usually not more than 2" long and may be of glass, carbon, asbestos, polypropylene, cellulose, cotton, acrylic or hessian. They may be applied to the thermoplastic sheet in the form of a resinbonded chopped strand mat which is pressed into the sheet by means of nip rollers or chopped strands may be deposited by spraying on to a hot extruded or calendered sheet by means of wheels equipped with cutting blades. Thermosetting resin is subsequently applied to the exposed fibres by curtain or roller coating, brushing or spray techniques. A flexible or rigid plastics film or a sprayable film solution may be applied to the exposed surface of the thermosetting material before it is pressed.
