Abstract
1280840 Differential gear ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 24 Dec 1969 62864/69 Heading F2D In a motor-vehicle limited-slip bevel differential gear comprising side bevel wheels 3 meshed by bevel planets 4 on a free cross pin 5 the outer ends of which have torque-responsive cam surfaces 6 contacting corresponding cam surfaces 8 on pressure rings 7 which are slidably splined to the input casing 2 and forced axially apart in dependence upon transmitted torque, via the cams 6, 8, to automatically engage multi-disc clutches 9, 10, or cone clutches (37, 38), Fig. 3 (not shown), each side to resist differential action, an independently controlled locking device 11 is operable to completely lock the limited-slip differential in any operational condition. As shown, the independently operable friction locking device 11 comprises a ring 12 which may be moved to engage the multi-disc clutch 9, 10 via pins 19 on an external shift sleeve 18, the ring 12 and input casing 2 being formed with a number of mating recesses 13, 16 housing camming balls 15 providing a servoaction, when engaged, whereby the clutch contact pressure is automatically increased to give very rapid full clutch engagement with only a small actuating force on the shift sleeve 18. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the camming balls are replaced by rollers (43) and sliding chamfered blocks (55) respectively. In Fig. 5 (not shown) an independent positive locking device (71) comprises axially movable pins (73), on a shift sleeve (72), which are guided in the input casing and may be moved to positively engage a clutch support end disc 69 splined to the side bevel wheel (63) to positively lock the limited-slip differential.
