Abstract
1280420 Metal sheathed heating elements EMERSON ELECTRIC CO 24 Sept 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 45670/70 Heading H5H The tube of a rod and tube thermal actuator controlling a contact unit 15 serially connected to a metal sheathed heating element 10, 11, is formed by one end 17 of the metal sheath 11, and the rod 12 which is of a metal having an expansion different from the sheath 11 has one end fixed inside the sheath end 17 and the other end movable relative to the sheath end 17. In the arrangement described, an excessive temperature rise sheath 17, which is of copper, expands more than rod 12 which is of nickel-steel and draws the rod 12 inwardly through bushing 37 so that contact unit 15 is opened through lever system 38 and plunger 39. The unit 15 may be automatically reset when the temperature falls. In an alternative construction the terminal connectors of the heating resistance 10 extend from opposite ends of the sheath and one of them is secured in the end 17 of the sheath by means of insulation to act as the rod 12 of the rod and tube thermal actuator. The metal mounting flange 14 to which the ends 16, 17 of the heating element are staked may be formed from a bar which in cross-section has a thicker central portion to which the ends of the element are secured and thinner flexible side flanges provided with mounting holes. This construction enables the thicker central portion to remain unstressed when the thinner flanges are secured to a curved vessel. The side flanges may be extended longitudinally to press a conventional thermostat against the outer surface of the vessel wall.
