Abstract

1280187 Non-oxide chalcogenide glasses TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 13 Aug 1969 [18 Oct 1968] 40525/69 Heading C1M [Also in Division G1] An ion-selective electrochemical sensor comprises a non-oxide chalcogenide glass consisting essentially of at least one element taken from at least two of the groups consisting of (a) S, Se and Te, (b) P, As and Sb, and (c) Si and Ge, and at least one impurity dopant homogeneously fused with the glass, the dopant being capable of producing an electric potential when in contact with a solution containing the ion whose concentration is to be measured. The glass may be of formula Sb 12 Ge 28 Se 60 ; Si 25 As 25 Te 50 ; Ge 10 As 20 Te 70 ; Si 15 Ge 10 As 25 Te 50 ; Ge 20 P 10 S 60 ; Ge 40 S 60 ; Ge 28 Sb 12 Se 60 ; As 50 S 20 Se 30 ; As 50 S 20 Se 20 - Te 10 ; As 25 S 10 Se 35 Te 20 ; As 38.7 Se 61.3 ; As 8 Se 92 or As 40 S 60 . The impurity dopant may be NaF, BaCl 2 , CdSe, CaCl 2 , KI, KCl, AgCl, MnCl 2 , MnSe, Mn, Fe 2 Se 3 , FeSe or Fe. The sensor may be made by fusing the dopant and glass or glass precursors in an evacuated and sealed container, agitating and cooling. The agitation may take place over 2-24 hours. The cooled sensor may be annealed for 2-3 hours.
