Abstract
1280139 Fuel elements COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 25 June 1971 [3 July 1970] 29963/71 Heading G6C A fuel element, particularly for use in a high temperature reactor, comprises a hollow fuel cylinder 2 made up of fissile material dispersed in a supporting matrix and surrounded by inner and outer coaxial graphite casing tubes 3 and 4, a radial slot 10 extending the full height of the fuel cylinder 2 which is applied against the opposing surface of one of the tubes 3, 4 (preferably the inner surface of the outer tube 4, as shown in Fig. 2) by virtue of its natural elasticity. The fuel cylinder 2 may be formed, for example, of uranium oxide or carbide dispersed in graphite. Cooling is effected by the passage of a suitable gas, e.g. helium, through the region 5 which is left free at the centre of the inner tube 3 and over the outer surface of the outer tube 4.
