Abstract

1280097 Chucks ERICKSON TOOL CO 25 Sept 1970 [3 April 1970] 45826/70 Heading B3B A tool holder for enchanging a tool 18 while a spindle is still rotating comprises a housing 2 having a socket 4 for receiving the shank 8 of a tool adaptor 5, the shank 8 and socket 4 being releasably locked together by a lock sleeve 10 which is axially movable on said housing 2 from a looking position whereat it cams a locking element 9 in said housing radially inwardly into engagement with a groove 12 on said adaptor, to an unlocking position whereat it releases said locking element for radial outward movement out of engagement with said groove 12 for axially withdrawal of said shank from said socket. The tool holder includes an actuator sleeve 22 attached to said lock sleeve 10 for rotation relative thereto and adapted to be grasped by hand to move said lock sleeve to said unlocking position. The socket and shank have complementary frusto-conical spaced surfaces 15, 14 which are engaged by means of the locking elements 9, e.g. balls, bearing with an axial component on the upper face of groove 12 to draw the shank and socket together. The tool holder includes an ejector 24 which also cams balls 28 radially outward to latch the actuator sleeve 22 in the unlocking position as the adaptor 5 is ejected. A transverse pin 6 provides driving engagement with the adaptor 5. A rotatable hand ring 19 is attached to the adaptor 5.
