Abstract
127,983. McWane, J. R. June 11, 1918. Spigot-and-socket joints held by caulking and the like; sleeve joints.-Relates to a caulked spigot-and-socket joint adapted to be made at the works and completed in a trench or other place. The socket is formed with a groove 6 near the mouth and a deep groove 8 at the base with a tapering wall 9. In the chamber so formed is placed a backing preferably formed of a series of blocks 11 held together by a lead strip 13, Fig. 6, this serving as an " anvil " when caulking. In making the joint at the works, a plug 14, slightly larger than the spigot of the pipe to be finally connected, is placed in position, and the joint made with the backing 11, jute or the like 15, and caulked lead 16, the object being to save lead. When in situ, the plug is withdrawn by a tool 23, and the. spigot inserted the caulkings being then completed. For connecting two lengths of plain piping, a sleeve 3a, Fig. 9, forming a double socket may be employed. Should the pipe line be deflected the blocks slide on the inclined wall 9 compressing the packing and so maintaining a tight joint.
