1279705 Umbrella frames OKUDA KK and S KITANI 11 Aug 1969 [13 Aug 1968 28 AUG 1968] 40097/69 Heading A4P An umbrella frame has ribs 5, Fig.1 pivoted to a crown 12 on a stick 11, each rib being supported by a structure comprising a base supporting strut 2 pivoted to a hub 13 and to an end supporting strut 3 pivoted at a fixed point 6 on the rib 5, means to prevent rotation of the strut 3 beyond a position in which the struts 2, 3 are in general alignment and an auxiliary strut 7 pivoted to a hub 14 and to strut 2, an increase of the distance between crown 12 and hub 14 causing the umbrella to close from an open position. Strut 3 may be pivoted to strut 2 at a point 4 on the upper side of strut 2 adjacent its outer end 10, the section of strut 2 between point 4 and end 10 abutting against strut 3 when the frame is open, or alternatively strut 3 may have an upwardlyopen channel section and may be pivoted at the end 10 of strut 2, the bottom inner end surface (10<SP>1</SP>), Fig.3 (not shown) of strut 3 engaging the lower side of strut 2 in the aligned position. The strut 7 may pivot with respect to strut 2 on the same or the opposite side thereof to the side on which strut 3 pivots. The hinged structure may be incorporated in an automatically opening and closing umbrella, Fig.8, wherein a tension spring 17 is connected between a hub 16, fixed to a hollow stick 11, and strut 3, strut 7 being pivoted to a hub 14 fixed to the stick, and rib 5 and strut 2 being pivoted to hubs 12 and 13 respectively, which are slidable on the stick and are interconnected by a lever 22 moved by an operating lever to open or close the umbrella. Alternative umbrellas wherein the hinged structure is enbodied is umbrellas having folding ribs; automatically opening umbrellas; automatically closing umbrellas; and automatically opening and closing umbrellas are described with reference to Fig.6 (not shown); Figs.4, 11 and 12; Fig.5 and Fig.7, (not shown) respectively.
