Abstract

1279246 Road traffic signals on vehicles FLEXIBLE LAMPS Ltd 16 Dec 1969 [16 Sept 1968] 43871/68 Heading G4Q A road vehicle electric indicating lamp circuit includes a thermal relay connected in the indicating lamp circuit and arranged to receive transmitted heat generated by a flow of current in a road lamp circuit separate from the indicating lamp circuit, the thermal relay being operated automatically by the transmitted heat when the road lamp circuit is switched on, and being connected in the indicating lamp circuit in such a way as to reduce the current flow through the indicating lamps, and hence to reduce their brightness, when so operated by the switching on of the road lamp circuit. In the illustrated embodiment, the brightness control circuit for the stop lamp circuit comprises a bimetallic thermal relay 10A mounted in a side or tail lamp housing 11A close to the lamp bulb 12A so that thermal radiation from the lamp filament will fall directly on the relay 10A and actuate it within a short period of the switching on of the lamp. The relay 10A which is normally closed is connected in parallel with a resistance 14A in the live line 16 of the associated stop lamp circuit. When the side and tail lamps are switched on, the relay 10A is opened and the resistance 14A brought into the stop lamp circuit so that the current flow through the stop lamp bulbs 18 is reduced. The flashing direction indicator lamp circuit comprises a pair of rear indicator lamps 20, a selector switch 21 and a flasher unit 23. A brightness control circuit comprises a resistance 14B across which a thermal relay 10B is connected in parallel. In this case, the relay 10B is mounted close to a resistance heating element 25 connected in parallel across a side or tail lamp bulb 12B. When the side and tail lamps are switched on, the heat generated by the element 25 will immediately open the relay 10B and bring the resistance 14B into series with a selected rear indicator lamp 20. The relay 10B and element 25 do not need to be mounted in the casing of a side or tail lamp, and they may be mounted adjacent one another in any convenient position. This invention enables the brightness of the stop and/or indicator lamps of a trailer to be controlled by means provided in the towing vehicle without the need for providing further electrical connections between the trailer and towing vehicle.
