Abstract
127,923. Cleathero, T., Lumb, C. F., and Spurr, F. Jan. 25, 1918. Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses having a locking-member which is rotated during the flight of the projectile so as to arm the fuse. According to the invention, the firing-needle is stationary until impact occurs, and is directly retained in the safety position by a rotary unbalanced inertia member. In the direct-action fuse shown in Fig. 1, an unbalanced member d<1>, d<2> is screwed into the fuse-body and normally locks the firing-pin b, through which a shearing- pin c passes. When the projectile is discharged, the body d', d<2> screws down, by virtue of its inertia, with or without the assistance of a spring. The firing-pin is then free to be driven in on impact. A. soft-metal strip d<4> engages with the roughened upper surface or edge of the part d<2>, to prevent accidental unscrewing; or a centrifugal or other locking-device may be provided. A modified construction of fuse-body is described. The application of the invention to a base fuse having an inertia firing-pellet b<4> is shown in Fig 3. The percussion cap may be arranged on a transversely movable centrifugal member, as described in Specification 127,924. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 126,351 and 126,711.
