Abstract

1278586 Regenerated cellulose sponges SPONCEL Ltd 11 Sept 1969 [13 Sept 1968] 43618/68 Headings C3A and C3C A regenerated cellulose sponge material is made from a sponge-forming viscose paste (i.e. a solution of sodium cellulose xanthate in caustic soda, sodium sulphate decahydrate, water, caustic soda and reinforcing fibres, e.g. of hemp or flax) by heating the sponge-forming viscose paste with passage of an alternating electric current therethrough until the crystals contained therein melt, discontinuing electrical heating at the point when the crystals have melted to leave a porous mass and subsequently heating the porous mass until regeneration is complete by circulating therethrough a heated liquid. The heated liquid may be an acid spray e.g. a mixture of sulphuric acid solution and sodium sulphate. The viscose paste may be extruded, prior to heating into a shined tubular cotton scrim. The electrodes carrying the current may be curved to shape the extrudate.
