Abstract
1278224 Directional crystallization TRW Inc 21 May 1971 [6 Oct 1970] 16265/71 Heading B1S [Also in Divisions B3 and H5] Directionally solidified castings are provided by preheating a ceramic mould, pouring molten metal into the mould, positioning a plurality of electrodes along the desired direction of grain, growth of the castings with their axes perpendicular to the desired grain growth direction. Connecting the electrodes to a high potential DC source and sequentially energising the electrodes to facilitate cooling of the casting by the application of an electrostatic field. A multicavitied turbine blade mould 10 is placed upon a copper water-cooled, chill plate 12, within an induction furnace having several annular sequentially operable graphite susceptors 18 separated by ceramic annular insulation 19. The insulation 19 supports electrodes 20-28 which are connected to an X-ray high voltage supply 29 by means of a sequential switching device 31. The mould 10 is preheated (e.g. to 2300‹F) and molten metal poured (e.g. nickel alloy at 2900‹F) whereupon an electrode 44 connected to the positive terminal of the DC supply 29 is dipped into the molten metal in the mould. Upward solidification is induced from the chill plate 12 and is continued by sequentially turning off the current supply of the susceptors 18 upwardly. To accelerate cooling the electrodes 20 to 28 are sequentially energised upwardly by device 31 controlled by a timer 32. Conduits 45 are provided in the induction furnace base 13 to supply air or inert gas to the mould to accelerate cooling.
