Abstract
1278009 Piezo-electric microphones STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 22 Oct 1970 50130/70 Heading H4J A pressure gradient microphone includes a piezo-electric disc transducer element, comprising a composite disc of piezo-electric material polarized through its thickness and attached to a second disc having equal acoustic stiffness, mounted within a hollow cylinder with its major surfaces normal to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. The disc 1, made of a mixture of lead and zirconium titanate is bonded to a disc of aluminium, brass or nickel iron or alternatively to a further piezo-electric disc and is mounted within housing 2 on a flexible membrane or a taut woven gauze 5 which is peripherally secured to the housing. Alternatively a rubber seal may be used to mount the disc in the housing, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the housing is of greater diameter and is provided with a centrally mounted diaphragm which drives the disc through a centrally disposed driver element. The disc in this case is provided with edge weights to lower its resonant frequency. The ends of the cylinder are covered by gauze 17. The piezo-electric disc has gold, nichrome or silver electrodes applied by evaporation and when two discs are used they may be polarized in the same or opposite directions.
