Abstract
1277528 Pyrotechnic compositions THIOKOL CHEMICAL CORP 21 Oct 1970 50068/70 Heading C1D [Also in Division F3] An illuminant composition for a flare comprises a polyester polymer containing a curing agent and a catalyst to speed curing during manufacture of the flare; a metal fuel selected from magnesium, aluminium, a mixture of magnesium and aluminium, or zirconium, and their hydrides, cerium and uranium; and an oxidizer selected from sodium; lithium, barium and strontium nitrates. The catalyst may be iron linoleate and other soaps of such fatty acids as stearic, naphthenic, octoic or 2-ethylhexoic resin (resinates) or tall oil (tallates) with metals such as aluminium, calcium, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, tin or zinc. The curing agent is an epoxy resin prepared by the reaction of epichlorohydrin with bis-phenol-A (2,2-bis-(4- hydroxyphenyl)-propane, or an epoxy resin prepared from polyglycidyl ethers of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, glycerol, dipropylene glycol, resorcinol, catechol, hydroquinone, 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxybenzophenone, 1,1- bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) - butane, or 1,5 - dihydroxynaphthalene. The polyester is a carboxyl-containing, low molecular weight, aliphatically saturated, substantially completely condensed polymeric polyester of a saturated aliphatic diol, a dicarbocyclic acid free from ethylenic unsaturation and a polyfunctional compound free from ethylenic unsaturation and containing at least three polyfunctional groups selected from the group consisting of polyols, polycarboxylic acids and polycarboxylic acid anhydrides. The polyester has an average of 2À5-15 carboxylic groups per molecule and an average molecular weight of 700-10,000. In an example, the illuminant composition comprises, in parts by weight, 95-110 parts of saturated, carboxyl-terminated polyester polymer, 12-25 parts trifunctional epoxy resin, iron linoleate, 500-1000 parts of magnesium granules having a mesh size of 50-200, 115-150 parts of sodium nitrate having a particle size of 150 Á, and 225-300 parts of sodium nitrate having a particle size of 5 Á.
