Abstract

1277345 Disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 28 May 1971 [2 June 1970] 26497/70 Heading F2E In a disc brake in which rotatable friction discs are brought into engagement with opposed radial surfaces in a stationary housing by pressure plates located between the discs angularly moved apart by balls located in inclined recesses in the plates, the angular movement to initiate application of the brake is effected by an hydraulic actuator. In the embodiment shown hydraulic pressure is supplied to a space 10 surrounding a piston 8 located in a cylinder 5, the piston acting through a collar 13, nuts 15, 16 and rod 14 on a pair of toggle levers 18, 19, junctioned by a pin 17, the outer ends of which are pivotally connected to lugs 21, 22 on the pressure plates. Piston 8 is loaded by a spring 23 towards a stop formed by a lip 24 on the cylinder. Spring 23 surrounds a sleeve 25 and abuts a flange 26 thereon and a lip 27 on the piston inner end. The screw-threaded outer end of rod 14 is connected to a handbrake lever. In a further embodiment collar 13 is coupled via a trunnion coupling 31, Fig. 2 (not shown), to a lever (32) pivoted on a pin (33) on a lug (34) on the cylinder or brake housing.
