Abstract

1277306 Welding by fusion WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 18 Sept 1969 [4 Oct 1968 (2)] 46085/69 Heading B3R [Also in Division C7] An arc welding electrode capable of providing a weld metal having a carbon content not exceeding 0À01 weight per cent and a silicon content not exceeding 0À4 weight per cent, comprises a core wire of austenitic steel provided with a flux coating which comprises a mixture agglomerated with 10-15 parts by weight of a water soluble silicate binder, said mixture including 0-25 parts by weight of chromium oxide, a metal fluoride and possibly a titanium salt. One part by weight is defined as one weight per cent of the total amount of only the non- metallic ingredients of the coating exclusive of H 2 O. Several examples are given which fall in the range: * as FeB (ferroboron) containing 20% boron. ** one or more of the titanates of the alkali or alkaline earth metals. ***alkali silicate binder exclusive of H 2 O content. CMC serves primarily as a slip agent for aiding extrusion. The fluorides include both fluorspar and cryolite. Examples of titanates are also K 2 Ti 3 O 7 and CaTi 3 O 7 . The core wire comprises by weight The balance being iron with incidental impurities. The carbon content is given at about 0À0005%-0À008% or about 0À002%.
