Feed-openings for solids regulated by gasholders; stirring charges in generators; purifying and cooling gases.-In an acetylene generator of the kind comprising a water tank 10 containing a carbide hopper 49 the valve 51 of which is provided with a stem 56 adapted to be operated by the fall of the gasometer bell 60, (1) an auxiliary compartment 66 having a door 65 operable manually by a rod 71 is provided in the hopper, the compartment being adapted to contain a charge of carbide sufficient for a short period, such as a single evening, to avoid the necessity of recharging the hopper at inconvenient times, and (2) the generator tank 23 is provided with a stirrer comprising a ring 34 carrying inwardly-extending lugs 35, 37 and adapted to be manually operated by a rod 42 through a lever 40, rod 31, cross-bar 32, and rods 33 connected to the lugs 35. A purifying-receptacle 16 having a perforated inner wall 17 is mounted above the generator tank 23 and is provided with pipes 15 leading to a cooling- chamber 14, to which the outlet pipe 74 is attached. Excess gas passes through openings 24, 53 into the gasometer bell 60. The generator tank 23 rests on a platform 26 supported by collars 27 on the pipes 15.
