1276818 Cutting-out apparatus VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 6820/70 Heading B4B Apparatus for cutting flexible sheet material, e.g. carpet, comprises a cutter blade support 25 and a back-up assembly 13 by which rolling pressure can be applied to sheet material laid across a cutter blade 27 on the support. The support 25 is mounted on a base 1 provided with a pedestal 3, 5 on which is pivoted a frame 7. The back-up assembly 13 is mounted on the frame 7 and is counterbalanced by a weight 11. The assembly 13 includes a curved back-up plate 37 connected by members 47, 49, Fig. 1, provided at each side of plates 31, Fig. 3, which are mounted on a beam 33 forming part of the frame 7; the back-up plate has a wear resistant surface 45, e.g. of nylon. A shaft 53 connects the pairs of members 47, 49 and passes through curved slots 35 formed in the plates 31; rollers 57, Fig. 3, are mounted on the shaft 53 for cooperation with the slots. The plates 31 are also formed with cam-shaped apertures 39 which co-operate with rollers 61 on the members 49. The shaft 53 is connected to the piston of a pneumatic cylinder 139 so that upon actuation of the latter the plate 37 is caused to be lowered and then rolled over material placed on the knife 27. Two further pairs of back-up assemblies 15, 17 are mounted on the frame 7, a pair on each side of the assembly 13. The assemblies 15 are similar to the assembly 13 except that they operate at substantially right-angles to the latter assembly. Each assembly 17 includes a pair of roller carriers 63, Fig. 5, pivotally mounted on a beam 81 and connected by links 65, the rollers (103), Fig. 6 (not shown), of each carrier being urged by springs 89 against a flexible plate 113 of, e.g. nylon. The carriers are movable by means of a pneumatic cylinder 139so that as the rollers ride over the nylon plate it is flexed and thereby forces the material into contact with a knife 29, Fig. 5; the knife may be moved within the limits of a slot 24 by means of a pneumatic actuator 23.
