Abstract

1,274,767. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd. 8 Sept., 1970 [5 Sept., 1969], No. 44027/69. Heading B8R. A document handling apparatus, e.g. incorporated into the apparatus disclosed in Specification 1,274,766, includes a reference surface, e.g. the vacuum shoe 6, on which at least a portion of a document is maintained in engagement, thickness sensing means, e.g. a finger 22, being movable substantially parallel to said surface into a position in which it is spaced away from the surface by the document thickness and carrying one part of an electrical circuit element having a variable electrical response the other part being locatable in a predetermined position relative to said surface, such that during movement of the sensing finger in a direction substantially perpendicular to said surface, a corresponding continuous variation in the electrical response of the circuit element is produced to detect the document thickness. The element may comprise a ferrite core 23 on the sensing finger and a coil 32 on the blade arm 13, the finger being mounted on an arm 20 pivoted to the arm 13 at 21 and urged downwardly by a spring 31 into engagement with a document held on the vacuum shoe 6. The inductor may be used to control the electromagnets (11), (15), Fig. 2 (not shown) which retract the blade 5 and shoe 6 to separate a document from the bottom of a pile and if a thickness of more than one document is sensed under the sensing finger, the blade and finger may be successively retracted from and advanced to the pile of documents until a single document is separated therefrom, or failing this a warning signal is generated.
