Abstract

1,274,418. Spray nozzle for turbines. MOTORENUND TURBINEN-UNION MUNCHEN G.m.b.H. 11 Sept., 1970 [12 Sept., 1969], No. 43667/70. Addition to 1,274,370. Heading F4T. In a fuel nozzle 4, as described, and claimed in parent Specification, two parts are relatively movable to vary the effective air intake crosssectional area. Axial movement of piston insert 11 causes its outer surface to partially close air intake passages 16, the movement being effected by fuel pressure acting against a biasing spring 21 (Fig. 2) or solenoid 51 (Fig. 9). Alternatively the air intake passages 16 can be closed or opened by varying the position of co-operating ports in an encircling sleeve (43) as in Fig. 8 (not shown) the spring 21 being absent in this case. Bushes 26 and 27 are screwed into housing 10 and their ends form stops 28 and 29 controlling the motion of insert 11 and with it the size of the aperture surrounding spray cone 34, and insert 11 may be formed with an annular shroud (37), as in Fig. 5 (not shown), inside swirl chamber 18 with passages (38) controlling air flow through holes 19. In the solenoid-operated insert 11 shown in Fig. 9, the drive from gas turbine engine G<SP>1</SP> and turbine T controls fuel pump 59 and control unit 63, which monitors turbine speed and controls solenoid 51 accordingly to adjust air flow to the nozzle 4.
