Abstract

1,273,009. Automatic speed control. EASTMAN KODAK CO. June 26, 1969 [June 28, 1968], No. 32330/69. Heading G3R. In a web winding apparatus, e.g. for winding lengths of photographic film from a large reel 10 on to individual small spools 14, a first train of pulses is produced, e.g. by a photo-electric tachometer generator 18, whose duration represents the linear speed of the web 12; a further train of pulses of fixed duration is produced each pulse of the first train initiating a pulse of the further train; and a capacitor 30 controlling the speed of a take up motor 16 driving the spool 14 is arranged to be charged up through a first resistance 38 (to increase motor speed) while the first pulses are longer than the fixed duration pulses and to be discharged (to reduce motor speed) through a second resistance 36 when they are shorter. The speed pulses are applied to an amplifier 46 having two antiphase outputs. One output triggers both a bi-stable 52 and a monostable 54. After a time, pre-set by resistor 56 and representing the desired web speed, the monostable resets the bistable. The two outputs of the bi-stable 52 are compared with the two outputs of the amplifier by AND gates 62, 68 and other AND gates 64, 66 are opened to connect the capacitor through resistors 38, 36 to a supply V or ground respectively if the speed pulses are longer or shorter than the bi-stable pulses respectively. Transistor circuits for the amplifier, bi-stable, monostable and gates are described, Fig. 4 (not shown). A start switch is included which applies a starting pulse to set the circuit in operation (before the tachometer issues pulses) and to short the capacitor 30 ensuring a smooth start from standstill.
