Abstract
1,272,804. Seismic charges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 July, 1970 [13 Aug., 1969], No. 40414/69. Heading F3A. [Also in Division H4] In a system for placing explosive charges in position for seismic prospecting, a line of elongated explosive is laid adjacent to and substantially parallel to the generally horizontal land surface or water surface of a prospect area, and fluent explosive material is placed in detonation transmission relation with the line to augment the seismic energy generated when the line is exploded. For land prospecting the explosives are buried by the plough shown. Detonating cord 19 from drum 20 emerges from the flexible end 17, 18 of a tubular conduit 15, and the fluent explosive 22 passes continuously or intermittently (as controlled by shutter 23 or a metering pump) from hopper 14 down a tubular conduit 13. A single conduit may be used instead of conduits 13 and 15. Cord 19 may comprise PETN in a waterproof sheath. The fluent explosive may be a powder, thickened liquid or slurry (e.g. a granular composition of TNT and ammonium nitrate; or a composition containing, by weight, 1 to 4 parts fuel oil, 99 to 96 parts ammonium nitrate and 0 to 15 parts aluminium; or a slurry of ammonium nitrate, water, a thickening agent for the water, fuel, and a PETN or isopropyl nitrate sensitizer. The conduits are preferably made of copper, brass, aluminium or plastics. Two or more parallel lines of detonating cord together with the associated auxiliary explosive may be placed simultaneously.
