A periscope comprises a head 2 provided with a mirror 4 rotatable on a spindle 3 by a servomotor 5 and adapted to deflect light entering the head 2 through an aperture 1 down through a vertically mounted tube 7, the head 2 being rotatable in a bearing 6 at the top of the tube 7 by means of a motor 13. The motor 13, whose speed may be varied by a rheostat 13a and which may be switched to forward or reverse movement by a change-over switch 14, rotates the head 2 through a gear wheel 9 which meshes with internal teeth 8 on the head 2 and which is mounted on a shaft 10 driven through a clutch 12 and gears 11. The clutch 12 permits adjustment by means of a hand wheel 15 instead of by the motor drive. Mounted on the shaft 10 is a second gear wheel 16 which engages a gear wheel having internal teeth and carrying an image-erecting prism 17, the speed of rotation of which is in the ratio of 1:2 to the speed of rotation of the head 2. Thus, if the head 2 rotates 180 degrees, the prism 17 rotates 90 degrees. A zoom lens system 18 is provided between the prism 17 and the deflecting mirror 4 for producing a change in the scale of magnification. The light from the prism 17 is deflected by a prism 19 to a horizontal eye-piece 20. The periscope may be focused on a specific object by hunting (switching the motor over to forward and reverse) and switching off when the desired position is reached, or by manual adjustment after disengaging the clutch.
