Abstract

1,272,638. Continuous gas chromatographic analysis system. SHELL INTERNATIONAL MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 22 May, 1969, No. 26209/69. Heading B1X. An electron capturing tracer travelling at the interface between, for example, two hydrocarbon liquids flowing in pipeline 18 are continuously monitored by entraining liquid samples removed by means of sampling valve 1 in a stream of purified carrier gas, e.g. nitrogen, and passing the stream to, and through, chromatography column 16 in unit 2. Unit 2 comprises a continuously or intermittently rotating turret of preferably six columns so arranged that while one column 16 is on-stream, another column 17 previously on-stream is backflushed with a sidestream 15 ofcarrier gas prior to coming on-stream again. Effluent from all the on-stream columns passes through an aftercolumn 13 which records a baseline against which the tracer material may be detected by electron capture detector 3. Sulphur hexafluoride or trichlorofluoromethane are suitable travelling tracers for hydrocarbon oils.
