Abstract

1,272,407. Recovering values from waste pickle liquor. PRENCO MFG. CO. 25 July, 1969 [26 Aug., 1968], No. 37550/69. Heading C1A. Waste H 2 SO 4 pickle liquor containing FeSO 4 and free H 2 SO 4 is treated to remove the iron content and to recover H 2 SO 4 by (i) removing a substantial portion of the water content of the liquor by evaporation to form a concentrate, (ii) preheating the concentrate in a closed space to a temperature at least equal to the vaporization temperature of the aqueous constituent of the concentrate at ambient pressure, (iii) atomizing the preheated concentrate in air and subjecting a stream of the atomized concentrate to a pyrodecomposition operation by heating the stream of atomized concentrate in an oxidizing atmosphere to about 3000‹F. at which the H 2 SO 4 content of the concentrate is decomposed into SO 2 and water vapour and the FeSO 4 content is decomposed into gaseous SO 2 , solid iron oxide particles and water vapour, (iv) separating the iron oxide particles from the effluent stream from (iii), (v) separating SO 2 from the effluent stream and reacting it with oxygen and water to form H 2 SO 4 which is recovered. A (hydro) carbonaceous fuel may be mixed with the concentrate to provide enough heat for step (iii), and the heat from the effluent stream of (iii) may be used for the evaporation in (i). Suitable apparatus is described.
