Abstract

1,272,178. Arc welding systems. LINDE A. G. 5 May, 1970 [6 June, 1969], No. 21505/70. Heading H2H. An A.C. welding arc or D.C. arc, is stabilized or struck by means of a high current pulse produced by discharging a capacitor, through a silicon controlled rectifier, whose control circuit contains a diac. A storage capacitor 10 is charged via a rectifier 8, and has a silicon controlled rectifier 15 in its discharge circuit, which includes pulse transformer 14 connected to electrode 3 and workpiece 4. Blocking capacitor 12 and inductor 13 function as commutators for the thyristor. The thyristor 15 is switched to a conducting state when the A.C., or D.C. input voltage reaches a certain magnitude. The magnitude at which the thyristor is fired is determined by means of potentiometer 27, and diac 20. Repeated firing of the thyristor 15 during a half cycle of an A.C. welding current, is prevented by means of a second thyristor 23, which shorts out capacitor 19 when it is triggered to the conducting state by the first output pulse passing diac 20. This circuit is inoperative if switch 26 is opened, The circuit just described only provides positive pulses. If pulses of alternating polarity are to be provided thyristor 15 is replaced by two thyristors arranged in anti-parallel, and each having its own control circuit, or by a triac.
