Abstract
1,271,829. Electrolytic desalination of water. GENERAL MARINE TECHNOLOGY CORP. Oct.20, 1969, No.51356/69. Heading C7B. [Also in Division C1] Salt (e.g. sea) water is desalinated by electrogravitational separation by flowing it between vertical electrodes of dissimilar metal, electrically connected externally of the water, so that an electrical current flows therebetween attracting positive and negative ions to each electrode causing an increase in density in the water adjacent each electrode where precipitation thus occurs, the remainder of water having less salt rising. A galvanic cell for such a process may comprise four hollow cylindrical Cu vessels in which are axially suspended Al tubes, serving respectively as cathode and anode elements, all electrically connected together externally. The vessels are connected together by piping, each inlet being at midheight and outlet at the top; removable bottom plugs are for periodically drawing-off dense brine containing precipitated salt.
