Crude aromatic polycarboxylic acids are purified by forming a solution of the acids in a phenol containing only one phenolic hydroxy group, or in an aqueous solution of such a phenol of at least 8% by weight concentration, and recovering purified acid by crystallization from the solution. The examples describe the purification of crude terephthalic acid.
