Abstract

1,271,776. Halogenated hydrocarbons. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 26 Oct., 1970 [14 Nov., 1969], No. 50842/70. Heading C2C. Halogenated hydrocarbons, e.g. dichloroethane, are manufactured continuously by supplying (i) C 1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbons, or their partially chlorinated derivatives, (ii) O 2 or gases containing O 2 , and (iii) HCl gas to a fluid bed of catalytic particles consisting of copper (metal or salts decomposable thereto) and alkali metal salts (e.g. chlorides) supported on an inert granular support material (e.g. SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , or decolorizing earths), and the height of the catalytic bed being maintained constant by the addition of solid support material, copper in the form of metal or decomposable salts and alkali metals in the form of chlorides. The oxychlorination temperatures are typically 230- 500‹ C. at pressures 1-6 atmospheres absolute.
