Abstract
1,271,445. Polymerization process. STANDARD OIL CO. 16 Sept., 1969 [17 Sept., 1968], No. 45656/69. Heading C3P. A process for polymerizing C 2-4 alpha-olefins comprises subjecting a reaction mixture comprising (a) an inert liquid hydrocarbon reaction medium, (b) an alpha-olefin monomer feedstock, and (c) a catalyst slurry comprising a suspension in the reaction medium of a supported oxide of a Group Va or Via metal and a compound AlR 3 wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, to conditions of temperature and pressure such that polymerization of the alpha olefin takes place; flashing off unreacted alpha olefin monomer; separating the residual mixture into liquid and solid phases; and recovering the dissolved polymerized alpha-olefin from the liquid phase. In the examples ethylene is polymerized in a batch process utilizing chromia dispersed on silica promoted by aluminium triisobutyl as catalyst and cyclohexane as solvent, and an ethylene-propylene copolymer is prepared by a continuous process utilizing the same catalyst and solvent.
