[Also in Division C2] An olefin ammoxidation catalyst consists of (a) from 10 to 95 parts by weight of a bismuth antimonate having an Sb:Bi atomic ratio of 1:1 and, correspondingly (b) from 90 to 5 parts by weight of a molybdate of tin, lead, manganese or of a metal of Group IB, for example copper or silver, or Group IIA, for example magnesium, calcium or barium, or Group IIB, for example zinc, cadmium or mercury, or Group VIII, for example iron, cobalt or nickel, up to 10 weight per cent of the bismuth antimonate (a) optionally consisting of material selected from other bismuth antimonates, for example Bi(SbO 3 ) 3 and (BiO) 3 SbO 4 , antimony oxides and bismuth oxides and up to (but not including) 20 weight per cent of the molybdate (b) optionally consisting of material selected from other molybdates, molybdenum oxides and oxides of the aforementioned metals. The molybdate (b) preferably has the formula M(MoO 4 ) m/2 or M(Mo 2 O 10 )m/a wherein M is an aforementioned metal having valency m; exemplified molybdates are Ag 2 MoO 4 , CaMoO 4 , CaMo 3 O 10 , BaMoO 4 , BaMo 3 O 10 , ZnMoO 4 , CdMoO 4 , PbMoO 4 , MnMoO 4 , Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , Fe 2 (Mo 3 0 10 ) 3 and CoMo 2 O 10 . The catalyst may be in the form of a composition comprising solid carrier material which may constitute from 10 to 90 weight per cent of the composition; exemplified carrier materials are silica, alumina, silica-alumina, silicates (none specified) and silicon carbide. The catalyst or composition may have a surface area of from 1 to 3m<SP>2</SP>/g.
