Abstract
1,270,608. Electro-phoretic deposition. FUJI PHOTO FILM CO. Ltd. Aug. 18, 1970 [Aug. 18, 1969J, No.39790/70. Heading C7B. A material, such as pigment particles with resin binder, is electro-photically deposited on one or both sides of an article, e.g. a metal plate or vessel 50, by partially or wholly immersing the article in an electro-deposition bath comprising particles (e.g. in solid, emulsoid, colloid or macromolecular form) of the material dispersed in an insulating liquid, and applying an electric potential e.g. 1-100 KV between a needle-shaped corona discharge electrode 20 disposed outside the bath and a counter-electrode, the article being placed between the electrodes and insulated therefrom. The bath vessel 21 may be conductive and used as the counter-electrode, or insulating with the counter-electrode disposed inside or outside the vessel Fig. 9 (not shown). As shown, the article may be floated on the bath. For simultaneously coating both sides of a vessel, the inside and outside thereof may be in respective contact with baths containing particles of opposite polarity. Examples of materials deposited are mixtures of (1) vinyl acetate resin, ZnO powder and acetone, and (2) nitrocellulose, C black, Soybean oil-modified alkyd resin and butyl acetate, each dispersed in kerosine having dispersed therein linseed oil by applying ultrasonic waves. The coating (e.g. of paint or ink) formed may be fixed by solvent vapour e.g. acetone or heating, and hardened by condensation polymerizing.
