Abstract

1,269,988. Locks. LIQUIDONICS INDUSTRIES INC. 15 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 19184/69. Heading E2A. A tumbler lock having a spring urged tumbler and a magnetically movable tumbler, each, in the locking position, preventing rotation of a cylinder in a body, and a keyway for insertion of a key which moves both the spring urged tumbler and the magnetically movable tumbler to unlocking position. The lock comprises a cylinder 18, rotatable in a body, the body has series of radial openings, one series being angularly spaced from another and the cylinder has a similar series of openings for two-part tumblers 28 which are urged by springs 28c, abutting an outer shell 22, to engage in the openings in the cylinder whereby the cylinder is prevented from rotation. The lock is released by a key 25 which aligns the junction of the tumbler parts 28a, 28b with the inner surfaces of the body. The key has a number of angularly inclined spaced magnets 46 which attract magnetic tumblers 34 displacing each from an opening in the body to wholly within an opening in the cylinder to allow the cylinder to rotate. A magnetizable insertion 40 in the body spaced from each magnet by a non magnetic spacer 38 attracts the tumblers 34 to the locking position. The bolt is operated through gears 52 and 54. In a modification the cylinder is eccentric of the body and there is one series of spring urged tumblers and one series of magnetic tumblers at right angles to the spring urged tumblers and alternating with them. In a modification of this construction the inner surface of the body is made with longitudinal grooves to accommodate movement of the magnetic pin tumblers and spaced parallel grooves to house bars of magnetizable material. The outer tumbler parts are mushroom shaped, and the inner tumbler parts are cylindrical. The bolt is operated directly by the cylinder rotation. In a further modification the key magnets and tumblers act by repulsion to release the bolt. The magnetic tumblers are in two parts and the body houses magnets to move the tumbler magnets to the locking position.
