Abstract

1,269,768. Methacrylamide. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 7 May, 1970 [8 May, 1969], No. 22191/70. Heading C2C. Methacrylamide is prepared by neutralizing methacrylamide sulphate with aqueous ammonia to a degree of neutralization of less than 95%, cooling the neutralized mixture, collecting the precipitated crude methacrylamide and purifying it by recrystallization from water or aqueous ammonia. The methacrylamide sulphate starting material may suitably be obtained by reacting acetone cyanohydrin with sulphuric acid. The neutralization is preferably carried out at from 5‹ to 30‹ C.
