Abstract
1,269,714. Electric conductors and insulation. GENERAL CABLE CORP. 16 May, 1969 [16 May, 1968], No. 25092/69. Heading H1A. A method of making paper-insulated conductors, comprises embedding a conductor 10 in a mass of the pulp at 26 with a flap extending from at least one side of the conductor, squeezing the coated pulp at 46 to form a wet paper strip and wrapping the flaps (32, 34) (Fig. 3, not shown), at 56 around the conductor to form a tube with a single seam. One of the flaps (34) is made substantially longer than the other (32) and some of the fibres on that surface of the flap forming the outside of the insulation tube are refloated by applying water at 64. The refloated fibres may be oriented helically across the seam to close it. Some intermeshing of the fibres, on the interfaces of the flap and the insulation below takes place at furnace 80. A dye could be added to water at 64 to colour the outside of the tube.
