Abstract

1,269,403. Brush holders for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 12 June, 1969 [21 June, 1968], No. 29814/69. Heading H2A. A brush assembly in a dynamo-electric machine comprises a prestressed volute spring 24 secured to a rigid backing member 26 which is pivotally mounted (36) on the brush holder so that the spring both urges the brush 16 towards the current-collecting surface 18 and at the same time biases a portion 42 of the backing member against the brush to hold the brush against a surface 44 of the brush holder. The spring preferably engages a sloping surface 30 of the brush so that the brush is held against surface 44 at both its upper and lower ends. The backing member 26 has a handle 48 to facilitate the disengaging of member 26 from pivot 36 when the brush is to be changed, complete removal of the member being prevented by pin 50. The surface of the portion 42 of the backing member may have a friction-free coating. The brush assembly may be used with reversible machines and may be mounted obliquely relative to the currentcollecting surface 18.
