A beam balance is provided with a beam 18 pivotally mounted on a support 12 by a fulcrum 22 which is attached to and extends into a sleeve member 25 forming part of the beam 18 and which bears on a notched bearing 16 attached to the support 12, the sleeve member 25 being arranged at least partly to surround the bearing 16. Two arms 20 which form part of the beam 18 and which extend from the sleeve member 25 in opposite directions support rider weights 45 and generally C-shaped members 26 to which weigh pans 30 are pivotally connected. The fulcrum 22 may be continuous with a pointer 24 which is movable relative to a scale 40 having feet (44) Fig. 2, (not shown), which are slidingly received in channels 37 on the faces of the bearing forming the notch. The support 12 and arms 20 may be of aluminium, the weigh pans 30 and C-shaped members 26 may be of plastics material and the surface on which the fulcrum 22 bears may be of agate. The rider weights 45 may be formed from flat strips of aluminium bent around the beam 18 and slideable thereon or of moulded plastics material.
