Abstract
1,268,861. Extruding composite polymer products. ALGEMENE KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N.V. 14 March, 1969 [16 March, 1968], No. 13610/69. Headings B5A and B5B. [Also in Division D1] An elongated extruded synthetic polymer product, e.g. a sheet, film, tube or rod, comprises at least two different synthetic polymer components, at least one component forming a matrix in which another component occurs in the form of at least 100 continuous fibres, the fibres being distributed in superimposed layers at differing angles to the longitudinal axis of the product. The matrix material may be polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene or nylon and the fibres may be of nylon or a polyester. In the embodiment shown, Fig. 3, layers 18, 19, 20 comprise fibres making successively smaller angles to the tube axis 17. Such a tube may be made using the apparatus of Fig. 1 where different polymers are fed by pumps 1, 2 through mixers 6, 7 as described in Specification 883,989 (see Division B1) or mixer 6 followed by a gauze pack, as described in Specification 1,188,843, to form a stream in conduit 8 comprising continuous filaments of one resin embedded in the other. This stream enters an annular space 12 defined between a housing 9 and a rotating mandrel 13 and is subsequently extruded as a tube 16, the shear effect caused by mandrel 13 producing a continuously differing orientation of the filaments from one surface of the tube to the other. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a rod (21) is formed with the fibre angle decreasing from the axis of the rod to the circumference thereof, in a third embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) a film or sheet is formed where the fibre angle is zero at the surfaces and 90 degrees at the central plane of the sheet, and in a fourth embodiment, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the housing 9 of Fig. 1 is provided with an inner wall (36) which rotates in the opposite direction to mandrel 13, the resulting tube having an intermediate layer (44) of fibre angle zero with increasing angles up to 90 degrees on both sides thereof, the increases being in opposite senses. Tubular films may be made by the normal inflation technique. Fibre sheets, filament sheets and yarns may be produced by wholly or partially removing the matrix material, e.g. by means of a solvent.
