Abstract
1,268,741. N-alkyl-α,#-unsaturated amides. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 30 Jan., 1970 [4 Feb., 1969 (2)], No. 4604/70. Heading C2C. A process for the preparation of an N-alkyl- α,#-unsaturated amide comprises reacting an α,#-unsaturated nitrile of the formula with water and an amine of the formula (R 2 )(R 3 )NH or R 4 NH wherein R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, R 3 is an alkyl group and R 4 is a cyclic alkylene group containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms. The reaction may also be carried out in two stages, in the latter of which the N-alkyl-#-alkylaminoamide intermediate is converted to the desired product. The reaction is preferably carried out at 150 to 280‹ C. in the presence of a free radical polymerization inhibitor and/or a catalyst such as a metal, an inorganic or organic acid. Examples describe the preparation of N,N-dimethyl-, N,N-diethyl-, N,N-di-n-hexyl-, N,N-di-n-butyl-, and N-isobutylacrylamide.
