Abstract

1,268,731. Overload protective systems; fusible cut-outs. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 15 May, 1970 [28 May, 1969], No. 23599/70. Headings H2G and H2K. [Also in Division H1] A protective switchgear for controlling an electric motor includes a device 13 for interupting the circuit to the motor; an overload responsive device 15 which operates the device 13 with a time delay if the motor current exceeds a first value below the locked-rotor current of the motor; a fault current responsive device 9 which intercepts the circuit more quickly if the current exceeds a second value greater than the lockedrotor current; and a current limiting device 11 acting rapidly to limit the current to a value which will not damage the overload responsive device 15. As described the devices 9, 13, 15 are respectively an electromagnetically tripped automatic circuit breaker, an electromagnetic contactor, and a thermal relay (see Division H1). The current limiting device 11 is a fuse consisting of a plurality of wires 109 extending between two terminals 101, 103 in a sand filling. When the fuse blows the heat in the sand is sufficient to fuse another unconnected wire 112 allowing an indicator button 113 to be moved upwards by a spring 114.
