Abstract

1,268,366. Digital transmission systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 20 Nov., 1969 [27 Nov., 1968], No. 56391/68. Heading H4P. In a telecommunication system which includes a switching centre having incoming and outgoing TDM highways in which speech and other signals are conveyed by a relatively high rate bit stream, and in which telegraph signals are also conveyed at a rate lower than the high bit rate, so that each telegraph element embraces several bits of the stream, the sign of each telegraph element is detected by a device which samples each element a number of times N and passes the results of said sampling to a store where a majority decision circuit determines the sign of each element when more than N/2 samplings are of the same sign. The system may handle telegraph traffic having a number of different element rates. The results of the sampling may be passed to an N bit shift register and if N = 8 then if 5 or more samplings indicate say a " 1 " condition the result is passed to a store. This arrangement can therefore tolerate three errors in eight. The channels are interconnected by coordinate matrix switches and telegraph signals are demodulated and stored until an outlet is available when they are modulated at bit rate in conventional manner. Each TDM channel may have a basic repetition rate of 19À2K baud which is de-multiplexed via the cross point device of the switch CS and passed to a de-modulator DE connectible to each switch vertical and a modulator MO having access to a switch horizontal, both demodulator and modulator working into a storage processor device SP having a means to identify the bit rate. For other repetition rates the clock pulses are also adjusted to run at eight times the information rate. The requirements of modulator MO are simpler than that for the demodulator as information reaching it from the store is assumed to be correct. Information may be transferred to or from the store either one character at a time or in blocks.
