Abstract

1,267,868. Cross-linking thermoplastic polymers. PEROXID-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 27 July, 1970 [29 July, 1969], No. 36252/70. Heading C3P. Thermoplastic macromolecular compounds are cross-linked by heating with a periodic compound of formula where A is ortho arylene, R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl and R<SP>1</SP> is t.-alkyl. Specified macromolecular compounds are polyethylene, polypropylene, olefin copolymers, silicone rubbers, acrylonitrile / butadiene / styrene copolymers, butadiene/acrylonitrile rubbers and natural rubber; which may be mixed with conventional fillers and colorants. Sulphur and conventional accelerators may be used as co-curing agents. Specified peroxides are 3-phenyl-3-t.-butylperoxy, 3 - phenyl - 3 - t. - amylperoxy, 3-pchlorophenyl - 3 - t. - butylperoxy, 3 - p - methyl phenyl - 3 - t. - butylperoxy, 3 - ethyl - 3 - t.- butylperoxy, 3 - m - ethylphenyl - 3 - t. - butylperoxy and 3 - methyl - 3 - t. - amylperoxy phthalide. Examples describe the cross-linking of polyethylenes, carbon black filled polyethylene, ethylene/propylene rubber and ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer.
