Abstract

1,267,235. Colour anodizing aluminium alloys. KAISER ALUMINIUM & CHEMICAL CORP. May 6, 1969, No.23137/69. Headings C7A and C7B. An aluminium body comprising 0À3-0À6% SI, 0À1-0À4% Fe, 0À2-0À6% Mn, 0À4-0À7% Mg, 0-0À1% each of Cr and Zn, 0-0À05% each of Cu and Ti, up to 0À05% each up to a total 0À15% other elements as impurities and balance Al, is anodized in an aqueous electrolyte containing 0À1-2% (e.g. 6 g/l) H 2 SO 4 or equivalent amount of SO 4 and 0À09-0À60 g-moles/l (e.g. 65 g/l) sulphosalicylic or sulphophthalic acid, sulphoresorinol or lignosulphonic acid, e.g. at a current density of 107-1076 amp/m<SP>2</SP> and peak voltage of 30-130 volts, until a total current quantity of 86-162 amp-hours/m<SP>2</SP> has passed, to form a neutral grey anodic oxide coating e.g. 0À6-1À2 mils thick. Undulating D.C. may be used. Prior to anodizing, the body may be prepared from ingot or billet form, homogenized at 500-580‹ C. for 4-20 hours, by forming into sheet or extrusion at 400-510‹ C., followed by cold rolling below 250‹ C. for sheet or forced air quenching and ageing at 160-230‹ C. for extrusion.
