Abstract
1,266,248. Determining hardness of metal magnetically. BRITISH CAST IRON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Oct. 9, 1970 [Oct. 22, 1969], No. 51653/69. Heading G1N. The carbon content and therefore the hardness of a ferrous metal component is determined by magnetizing the component to saturation in a solenoid 1 and then applying a linearly increasing demagnetizing current until the component is completely de-magnetized, as sensed by a pair of Hall detectors 5, the final de-magnetizing current being displayed at 6 in terms of coersive force or degree of hardness i.e. by a scale or comparison with standard values. Automatic sorting may then take place. The components are supplied to the solenoid by a conveyer which is automatically stopped, mechanically or electrically (using the detectors 5), when the component is at the centre of the solenoid.
