Abstract

1,266,059. Electrohydraulic forming. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 11 Sept., 1969 [25 Sept., 1968 (2)], No. 44969/69. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division H1] An electrohydraulic forming device comprises a chamber having an elastic wall, means 45 for introducing electrically non-conducting liquid into the chamber, which may be water, benzene, acetone, a sorbitol or a methylene chloride solution, and means for introducing an electrically conductive liquid to form a preferred path between two electrodes for an electrical discharge. The electrodes may be opposite one another as shown in Fig. 8, the upper one being the anode. Conductive liquid is passed through the upper electrode 32 and impinges the lower electrode 33 as a fine stream entering a longitudinal channel and being dispersed by lateral channels. The flow of conductive liquid is intermittent and the pulse from the H.V. power supply is timed to occur after the conductive fluid starts flowing. In other embodiments a flow of the non-conductive liquid through the chamber maintains the integrity of the conductive stream, Figs. 2, 4 and 5 (not shown). The electrodes may be coaxial and the non-conductive liquid flows past them such that the conductive liquid remains in the vicinity of the electrodes. In operating the device the non-conductive liquid is first introduced into a blank around the device. The blank is in turn surrounded by a two-part die. The non-conductive liquid is pressurized, by means of an intensifier (66), Fig. 10 (not shown), to rough form the blank in the die, then the conductive liquid is passed into the chamber under pressure from a second intensifier (75). After the electrical discharge has taken place the chamber is evacuated of debris and flushed with fresh non-conductive liquid and the cycle recommences.
