Abstract
1,265,691. Heat exchangers. GARRETT CORP. 7 March, 1969 [11 March, 1968], No. 12251/69. Heading F4S. In a plate heat exchanger, heat exchange occurs between two fluids which are separated by a buffer or barrier fluid at a higher pressure e.g. hot engine air cooled by liquid fuel as in an aircraft and utilizing water or nitrogen under pressure to prevent mixing therebetween or to act as a leak detection fluid. The heat exchanger comprises side plates 16, 17 between which and parallel thereto are mounted spaced heat transfer plates 21, alternate spaces having corrugations 31 mounted therein to form horizontal passages for flow of air from a flange 11 to flange 12. The other, alternate spaces between the plates 21 each house an inverted U-shaped passageway formed by plates 47a, 47b of dish form which are disposed face to face and each having a depending central rib 49 which are bonded together. The cooling fluid passes from an inlet 13 in the side plate through openings in a header pipe 44a, through the U-shaped passageway, to enter openings in an outlet header pipe 44b to leave the exchanger through an outlet 14. Corrugations 52 are disposed in the U-shaped passageway between adjacent plates 47a, 47b and corrugations 53 are positioned between the plates 21 and the adjacent respective plates 47a, 47b. Buffer fluid flows vertically through the corrugations 53 between upper and lower manifolds formed by semi-cylindricalplates 18, 19 secured to upper and lower ends of the plates 16, 17 and flanges 11, 12. Vertical and horizontal spacers 22, 22a, 23, 24 are mounted between the plates 21 and between the plates 16, 21 and 17, 21 and are formed as tubes to allow the buffer fluid to flow therein. The compartment containing the buffer fluid is pressurized, e.g. 'by pressurizing means and/or a relief valve to a pressure greater than either of the two heat exchange fluids.
