Abstract
1,265,672. Surgical prostheses. ETHICON Inc. 14 March, 1969 [15 March, 1968], No. 13573/69. Heading A5R. [Also in Division C3] A surgical prosthesis formed entirely of collagen comprises a piece of collagen fabric with collagen fibrils therein orientated biaxially. The prosthesis may be made by swelling a fabric of collagen tape or multifilament in an acid solution which may contain swollen collagen fibrils. The fabric is then frozen and lyophilized to form a porous sponge, impermeable to blood, and with the fibrils orientated in the directions of the collagen strands of the fabric, i.e. substantially perpendicularly.
