Abstract

1,265,229. Heat pumps. DAIKIN KOGYO CO. Ltd. 24 Dec., 1969 [24 Dec., 1968; 28 Dec., 1968; 3 Feb., 1969], No. 62847/69. Heading F4H. In an air conditioner including a reversible compression refrigerating system having indoor and outdoor heat exchangers 3 and 5, the indoor heat exchanger 3 comprises first and second heat exchangers 3<SP>1</SP> and 3<SP>11</SP> between which refrigerant heating means 6 is inserted. During the heating cycle (solid arrow lines) wherein room air to be heated passes through the indoor heat exchanger 3, refrigerant gas from the compressor 1 passes into the first heat exchanger 3<SP>1</SP> where it is partially or wholly condensed and then through conduit 10 into the heating means 6 where it accumulates and is heated by an electric heater 7 and partially evaporated. The gas-liquid mixture leaving the heating means 6 through an upper conduit 11 enters the second heat exchanger 3<SP>11</SP> where the gaseous refrigerant is condensed again. Refrigerant is returned to the compressor 1 by way of capillary tube 4, outside heat exchanger 5, four-way valve 2 and accumulator 14. The electric heater 7 together with an overheat thermostat 9 is mounted within -an externally finned tube 8. In a modification (see Fig. 8, not shown) the refrigerant is heated directly by the electric heater. An electric circuit (see Fig. 3) is provided for controlling the compressor 1 and heater 7, the heater being actuated during the heating cycle only when the compressor is in operation. The speed of a fan discharging air into the room is controlled in dependence of the temperature of the discharging air. For removing frost formed on the surface of the outside heat exchanger when the outside temperature is low, the air conditioner is switched to the cooling cycle and the electric heater is energized to raise the refrigerant temperature and thereby speed up the defrosting: the fan is stopped during defrosting.
