A load testing device for goods containers is capable of lifting tests with an overload in the container, another lifting test with an external load fixed to the front of the container, compression and tension tests on the container's base, tilting or racking tests and a compression test on the top of the container whilst its base is fixed. The testing device comprises a rectangular framework 5 having a base, sides and top, pressure and tension applying jacks 4 mounted on the base, lifting jacks 13, one for each corner of the container, mounted on the base, tilting or racking jacks (18, Fig. 3) mounted on vertical side members of the framework, jacks 16 mounted on top girders 17 and lifting means (Figs. 2 and 5) carried by the top girders 17. The framework may consist of two parts 1 and 2, the part 1 including a block 24 for lifting the container from a vehicle and transporting it to the part 2 whereat the various tests are made. Alternatively the part 1 may be dispensed with, its function of removing the container from a vehicle being achieved by a removable floor over the lifting jacks 13. An additional framework 14 is placed on top of the container in its test position to compensate for differences in height between the position from which the container is removed from the vehicle and its position on the test base and for variations in the height of different containers. The pressure and tension applying jacks 4 and base located fixing pins are provided with twistpin ends to engage and lock in holes in the container base. The position of the jacks associated with one end of the container are movable allowing the device to be utilized with containers of varying lengths. The device includes a central control point for individually controlling and indicating the pressures exerted by the jacks.
