Abstract

1,264,673. Diathermy electrodes. MATBURN (HOLDINGS) Ltd. 14 April, 1970, No. 21180/69. Heading A5R. An electrode for medical use consists of a thin flexible sheet of metal foil 1 and a backing 2 of thin flexible plastics material provided with integral conductor leads 3, 4 also constisting of metal foil with a plastics backing. The other surface of the foil may have an insulating covering (5) Fig. 2, (not shown). The leads 3, 4 may be coiled around the electrode, adjacent turns being separated by borders 8 of insulating material, which may initially be joined by easily broken portions prior to use. The leads are provided with terminal portions 6, 7. The electrode may consist of aluminium, copper, or stainless alloy, and the backing may be a polyester, polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene. The electrode may be produced by an etching technique similar to the production of printed circuits. The electrode is provided with two leads to enable a small current, in addition to the diathermy current, to be passed down one conductor and back along the other to continuously monitor the continuity of the electrode circuit. A removable covering may be provided to protect the metal surface before use.
